A special election will occur because of the resignation of Senator Branden Petersen, effective October 31, 2015. Senate District 35 is within Anoka County, including the entire cities of Anoka and Ramsey, and parts of the cities of Andover and Coon Rapids.

Guest speaker is Kathleen O'Brien who is preparing an oral history about women who served in Minnesota government from 1970--2000. Many LWV Minnesota league members are featured in her history.

This committee is made up of LWV MN's citizen lobbyists who monitor and help shape issues as diverse as voting and elections, health care, transportation, environment, energy and education. Kathy will speak on LWV MN's legislative priorities and how local LWV members can participate in this process and evaluate progress made this legislative session on a variety of topics.

Voters in Coon Rapids will have a primary election on August 9 to narrow the field of city council candidates to two in Wards 1 and 4. To assist voters with learning more about candidates, League of Women Voters ABC (Anoka, Blaine, Coon Rapids area) will host a candidate forum for the six candidates in Ward 1 and the five candidates in Ward 4. Candidates will be responding to prepared questions and to written questions from the audience. The forum will also be taped by CTN-Community Television Network. Pollinator Party. The Andover Pollinator Awareness Project will host a Pollinator Party and LWV ABC will have a table there to give pollinator garden seeds and talk with people about LWV and our role in voter service and advocacy on local issues, such as the pollinator work.

Seven residences in Andover. Pollinator Friendly Garden Tour. Take a self-guided tour of Andover gardens to view various types of pollinator-friendly landscapes at seven homes. Features on this year's tour include straw bale gardening, shade and native plantings, rain gardens, beekeeping, and how to plant a prairie landscape.

Hosts, including Anoka County Master Gardeners, will be on hand at each home to answer questions. Visitors will have opportunities to learn about plants and landscapes that benefit pollinators and other wildlife, are visually appealing, and help storm water quality.

LWV ABC partners with the Andover Pollinator Awareness Project (APAP) to protect pollinators through education, habitat creation and reducing harmful pesticides. Other partners include City of Andover, Anoka County Master Gardeners,and local residents.
